The shutter stood wide, large and unfriendly. Now, how should we transform it? Ancient natives who lived in Japan, before China, were said to have had magatama (a type of jewelry with a shape of a Japanese gem). The shape of the magatama is the yang part of the yin-yang symbol, signifying that the yin part is nothing and cannot be seen, but the yang part is there, meaning that one side exists at the same time. It is easy to understand the black-and-white pictures of China because we can see them; we say 'the world' includes the so-called invisible parts as well. Butterflies with eye-dot patterns, which have suddenly increased since Obon (an annual holiday when the spirits of families and ancestors travel back to this world), are always playing around with me. When I heard my friend say, "Is that my grandma and grandpa?", I was deeply impressed by the fact that Japanese people have always felt this kind of invisible presence close to them. This thought makes me feel deep appreciation to the space of nothingness that protects and supports my tiny 'moment'. Street art is decisive for the first idea that comes to mind when you go to a place. First, Yoichi is yang and draws an arrow from the sea of yin. The miko and the fan of yin exist in the space of yang. This first settles the composition. After that, I just have fun and paint in the hope that the viewers will feel happy and joyful. I am grateful for this life that I have been given for a moment, supported by nothingness in between the long history and the future that lies ahead. I feel that this act of painting is what I can do now. |
